Grilled or Air Fryer Asparagus

Grilled asparagus is an easy, healthy side dish that takes just minutes to prepare. This recipe gives you two simple cooking options: grill the asparagus for lightly charred edges and smoky flavor, or use the air fryer for a quick weeknight side.

Fresh asparagus is lightly coated with extra virgin olive oil spray and seasoned with garlic salt for a simple, tender-crisp vegetable that pairs well with chicken, salmon, beef, or other protein-focused meals. Whether you make grilled asparagus or air fryer asparagus, it is ready in about 15 minutes with very little prep.

Ingredients

Asparagus

  • 1 lb fresh asparagus, woody ends trimmed
  • Extra virgin olive oil spray, enough to lightly coat
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt, or to taste

Equipment

  • Air fryer or outdoor grill
  • Tongs
  • Cutting board

Instructions

Prepare the Asparagus

  1. Rinse the asparagus and pat it completely dry.
  2. Trim or snap off the woody ends.
  3. Lightly spray the asparagus with extra virgin olive oil.
  4. Sprinkle lightly and evenly with garlic salt, then toss or roll the spears so they are coated on all sides.

Air Fryer

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (204°C), if your air fryer requires preheating.
  2. Arrange the asparagus in the air fryer basket in a mostly single layer.
  3. Air fry for about 6–8 minutes, shaking or turning the asparagus halfway through, until bright green, lightly browned and tender-crisp.
  4. Thicker asparagus may need an additional 1–2 minutes.

Grill

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Place the seasoned asparagus directly on the grill grates, perpendicular to the grates so the spears do not fall through.
  3. Grill for about 6–8 minutes, rolling the asparagus over with tongs as it cooks so all sides develop light char marks.
  4. Remove from the grill when the asparagus is tender-crisp and lightly charred.

Serve

  1. Transfer the asparagus to a serving plate and serve warm.

Notes

  • Nutrition is an estimate per serving based on 1 lb of asparagus, approximately 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil from the spray, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt. Actual values will vary depending on the amount of oil spray and garlic salt used.
  • Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the asparagus spears.
  • For softer asparagus, cook 1–2 minutes longer. For a firmer tender-crisp texture, begin checking early.
  • When grilling, keep rolling the asparagus as it cooks so it browns evenly without burning.
